In Plymouth, the big news at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital is that the crew building the expanded Emergency Department placed the final beam onto the framework of the new construction—and the forecasted completion is late summer of 2028. Built in 1993, BID’s Emergency Department expected to handle 27,000 visits annually – now, that number is 46,000 annual visits. So, the expansion of the Emergency Department is welcome news.

Erin Yale, is Chief Operating Officer at BID Plymouth:
“Our goal is to build for today and also for the future so that we can take care of many patients. We will be done with all the construction October 31st, 2028. However, we have five different sections—five different parts that are coming together. With that, we’ll start to see improvements right away. The first being renovated and more patient-friendly, and family-friendly entrance and waiting area.”

Yale says the ER is designed for the patient….
“We designed this to accommodate, first, more patients, and in a setting where they will have more privacy. We’ve done that by creating individual private rooms that not only will take care of the patients but the family can also come and be in that room with the patient.”
And, Yale adds, staff has…
“…been involved in the design. We mocked up a room –and for two weeks, we had post -it notes—and hundreds of them all over. How would you like this to look? How can you best take of a patient in a room like this? We are designing for what works for the providers and the other care givers.”
