History was made in Tuesday’s Brockton election where voters elected the city’s first mayor of color.
Moises Rodrigues defeated challenger Jean Bradley Derenoncourt by 260 votes.
Rodriques received 6,680 votes and Derenoncourt garnered 6,420 ballots.
Rodriques, a longtime city councilor, takes the reins from Robert Sullivan who served as the city’s mayor for six years.
In the councilor-at-large race, incumbents Winthrop Farwell Junior and David Teixeira were reelected and will be joined by newcomers Carla Darosa and Jeff Charnel.
Several incumbent ward councilors were reelected, Maria Taveres in Ward 2, Philip Griffin in Ward 3, Suan Nicastro in Ward 4, Jeffrey Thomspon in Ward 5, John Lally in Ward 6, and Shirley Asack in Ward 7.
Ward one has a new councilor, Marlon Green defeated challenger Ulisses Varela by just seven votes.
School committee incumbents Claudio Depina Gomes, Ana Oliver, Tony Rodrigues, Joyce Asack and Tim Sullivan were reelected.
Newcomers Stephen Pina and Sandra Centeio were also elected to the school committee.
Over 19 percent of Brockton voters turned out at the polls.
