The state supreme judicial court on Thursday upheld an injunction that blocks the city of Quincy from placing two statues at the entrance of its recently opened public safety building.
The 10-foot-tall statues are Saint Florian and Saint Michael, patron saints of firefighters and police respectively.
The American Civil Liberties Union is representing a group of Quincy residents who are opposed to having the statues on the building.
They have argued that it would appear the city endorses a particular religion.
City officials counter that the statues represent first responders and are not overly religious.
Quincy officials say they were disappointed with the ruling but plan to continue their fight to place the statues on the building.
The city has spent about $850,000 on the statues.
The new public safety building, that was built behind the old police station at Sea Street and Southern Artery, opened in May.
The old police station has been demolished to make way for a park and green space.
